    You’ve reached your ultimate life goal: retirement. So what happens next? How do you find your purpose in life after retirement? I’m going to help you out with this in-depth article where I share 12 helpful tips, so continue reading.

    1) Relax And Take Time For Yourself

    When you retire you lose daily routines, social interactions, and your purpose in life. And your purpose is the reason why you get up in the morning. This purpose can guide you through big life decisions, it helps you to set and achieve life goals, it influences your behavior, and it gives you a direction in life. Having a purpose in retirement gives you a meaningful and satisfying feeling. It gives you a feeling of contentment and that is the key to (more) happiness in retirement. Who doesn’t want that?!

    Finding your purpose is very important to live a happy retired life. But you can’t find your purpose if your mind is busy, your body is tired of all the stressful years of hard work and you can’t hear your gut feeling speaking.

    You need time to relax and take the time to unwind and regroup. And this is for some people not that easy. After working hard for many years, so you’ve become adjusted to a faster life, and slowing things down is very strange and feels uncomfortable at first. You’ve might ask yourself: How can I relax in retirement?

    You can have the feeling of always wanting to be productive and busy but to be able to relax you need to allow yourself to relax. You’ve earned it. Grant yourself 2 months of doing nothing in retirement.

    It gives you space to slow things down and not go in productive mode all the time or have an agenda filled with appointments to keep yourself busy. If you take time to relax you’ll get closer to finding your purpose because you need to have a fresh starting point to go on your search quest.

    2) Do Things You Love To Do

    Once you’ve taken the time off in retirement and you’re reenergized you can go on the discovery tour. Because when you want to find your purpose in retirement you need to explore and try out things. Feel, see, and taste your way to your purpose.

    And you can start by doing the things you’ve always enjoyed doing. Things, hobbies, sports that come easy to you. What is your natural talent? Perhaps it’s being creative with art, active with sports, or express yourself through music, or something else that rings a bell right now. Go out and do it. Make time to really pursue it in retirement and see where it gets you.

    3) Explore New Things

    Another way to get closer to finding your purpose is to explore new things in life. Therefore you need to search in areas that are unexplored territory for you. Because how would you ever know how you feel about an activity if you’ve never tried it? We gain more perspective and clarity through experiences, so that’s why we need to purposely expose ourselves to new experiences. Getting out of your comfort zone is the area where magical things can happen. And retirement is the best time to do that.

    4) Follow Your Intuition

    As I mentioned earlier in this article you need to get familiar with your gut feeling because finding your purpose isn’t an intellectual pursuit; itโ€™s something you need to feel. You need to follow what your gut feeling is telling you and that will ultimately get you closer to your purpose. But how do you know what following your intuition feels like?

    You’ve definitely felt it before, but often because of our busy lives and career, we’ve forgotten how to listen to our intuition. We’re so trained and programmed to think with our minds and make decisions that are based on logic. But intuition isn’t logic at all. Intuition is a soft feeling in our body which is difficult to listen to because often our minds are screaming.

    You need to fuel it again and train it as a muscle so that it becomes stronger, louder, and clear. Here is an example of how intuition feels like:

    I should say Yes
    My head says Yes
    Logic says Yes
    Reason says Yes
    Friend says Yes
    Butโ€ฆ
    My gut says no, I donโ€™t know why it says No but it says No. 
    Soโ€ฆ
    My answer is NO

    Our intuition knows better what we like and dislike. It’s a magical well of wisdom you really want to tap into when it comes to finding your purpose. Your intuition knows what your soul wants, and that’s why you always need to listen to it.

    You can train it with small decisions throughout your retirement day. For example, ask yourself: Do I want a sandwich or pancake for breakfast? And see what it feels like. It sounds so silly, but it really helps. Continue doing this with any decision during your day so it becomes easier over time and helps you along the way when you need to make bigger decisions in your life.

    5) Read

    Reading is like traveling to other worlds without leaving your own house. You can dive into a character, feel what they experience, and get an insight into their entire lifespan in a matter of hours or days. You connect with people you’ll never know or encounter in real life. Your view of the world becomes broader (if you read all sorts of different books).

    Finding your purpose can be an act of imagination. You can simply escape reality by opening a book and start reading in retirement. Your imagination takes off and you can find a lot of insight about your purpose by reading about other people’s purpose in life.

    In the research: Literary arts and the development of the life story, Raymond A. Mar and colleagues found a link between reading fiction books and a sense of purpose among adolescents. They suggest that by reading fiction and seeing the purpose in the lives of others, adolescents are likely to see it in their own lives.

    And as an adolescent, you as a retiree also have the freedom in the world and can go into any direction your heart desires. So reading a lot of fiction books in retirement can be a great exercise for you that gets you closer to your purpose.     6) Question Yourself

    There are provoking questions you can ask yourself to find out what really matters to you in life. When you know what’s important to you, you’re very close to finding your purpose. Because the important things in life give your life meaning and create happiness. The other unimportant things in life just kill time. Telling these things apart makes a huge difference.

    And also for everyone, it’s different. What is unimportant to me can be very important to you and vice versa.

    Here are some questions that you hopefully find some meaningful answers to:

    • Whatโ€™s true about you today that would make your 8-year-old self cry?

    Often life gets in the way. And we’re socially or professionally pressured into a direction in life that we’re not passionate about, but we do it anyway. Because we get paid to do it. Well, as a kid we didn’t seem to care what others think. We only did stuff we loved to do. We wanted to play. So see if there is something that you loved to do as a kid, but over the years stopped doing.

    • What makes you forget about time?

    Which activity do you love to do and makes you forget about the time? It’s the activity that makes you forget to eat and poop. If you know what that is you’ve got yourself an answer and probably found the one things you’re passionate about. Congratulations!

    • Which “world problem” do you want to fix?

    Helping others and making a difference to create a better world instantly makes you happier and fulfilled. It gives your life meaning and gives it purpose. It’s not a surprise that a lot of retirees love to do volunteer work.

    • How do you want to be remembered?

    When you die how do you want to be remembered? Would you want to be remembered as a successful businessman? As the woman that cared about others? Our perspective and value of life get a lot clearer when we envision ourselves on our deathbeds. You get a sense of what’s important about your existence when you imagine you don’t exist anymore.

    7) Find Your Passion

    Find your passion first because that will lead you to your purpose. It sounds easy, right?

    Often the roads are the same. You go through similar paths to find your passion and/ or purpose. It’s also about experimenting with activities, getting out of your head and get inspiration from books, videos, and podcasts.

    8) Think About Your Past

    Another technique to find your purpose is to think about your past. Often you can find the answers when you look back and think about past happy experiences. Ask yourself: When have I felt most fulfilled? Or when have I felt the most joy in life?

    Try to come up with 3 to 5 different past experiences and find the common ground. What was it that made you feel fulfilled and happy? Perhaps it’s not the specific activity that answers your question but the cognitive principles behind the activities. See which pattern you can find and try it out.

    9) Do A Test

    Finding your purpose means getting to know yourself better. You’ve probably known who you are in career-life, but what about your personal life? You’re not your job position anymore. So who are you outside of work?

    If you can’t answer this question you can do a test or series of tests to find a little bit more about yourself.

    One of the best tests out there to get clarity about things that matter most in life is the Passion Test created by Janet Atwood also the writer of the book: The Passion Test. It only requires a couple of minutes of your time where you answer 7 questions. It can help you further in the quest to find your purpose in retirement.

    They’re also all sorts of other tests out there that you can do to learn more about yourself: The Meyers Briggs Test, Chakra Test, Enneagram Test, etc.

    10) Look At The People Around You

    Your vibe attracts your tribe. Often your purpose can be found in the people around you. Take a look at the people around you and see what you have in common? Who are they and what are they trying to be? Do they have a positive impact on you and the world? Do you want to be surrounded by them and join them in their purpose?

    When you retire you lose the daily social interactions that came with the job. To be happy in retirement you need to socialize and therefore need to seek new ways to be social. But you want to be surrounded by people that uplift you and that bring out the best in you.

    If your social circle brings happiness to you, take a closer look, and see what you’ll have in common. And if your social circle is a bit small or the people do not energize you then you might need to find new connections and with that, a new purpose might come as well.

    11) Practice Gratitude

    Being grateful won’t give you a purpose in life but practicing gratitude helps to promote your overall health and well-being and that gives you the emotional foundation for a sense of purpose.

    Reflecting on your blessing naturally inclines you to consider how to give back. And helping others and being kind can make our lives feel more meaningful according to this study. Also, Daryl Van Tongeren and colleagues found by their study that people who engage in more altruistic behaviors, such as doing volunteer work or donating money to charity, tend to have a greater sense of purpose in their lives.

    You can cultivate a gratitude attitude every day in retirement by keeping a gratitude journal.

    12) Get Help From A Life Coach

    When you’re stuck, you can get help from a life coach. He or she can give you the tools to get a new depth, clarity, and perspective about your life. Retirement is a major life change and there are coaches out there that are specialized and can help you navigate through this transition and all the emotions that come with it.

    It’s very common to seek help for professional financial advice when you’re planning your retirement, but seeking psychological help is still a taboo. Unfortunately. The threshold to go to a life coach is high, but it can be very beneficial. It’s for your own happiness.

    You want to make sure you can enjoy your retirement as long as possible. And therefore you need to make your health a priority every day in retirement.     25) Try Out RV Life 

    The RV life is for some retirees the ultimate dream. And you can try it out to see if this life suits you too. You can rent an RV for a couple of weeks and visit National Parks and other areas you’ve always wanted to visit.

    26) Enjoy Happy Hour

    As I mentioned earlier, every hour in retirement can be a happy hour. Now you don’t want to become an alcoholic but you do can enjoy a nice drink or cocktail at the end of the day. Invite a neighbor or friend and make it into a social habit and toast to another great retirement day.

    You can become a foster grandparent and be a role model for other kids. And give them life experience, wisdom, love, and attention. And you can learn from them as well. Being surrounded by young people keeps you young at heart and up to date about all the modern technologies.

    And they’re many different programs out there that are always looking for new grandparents. You can google your state foster grandparent program to see what possibilities are out there. Or check out National Service for more information on becoming a foster grandparent. 

    30) Host A Game Night

    When you love to play games you can host a game night in retirement. Perhaps you have a nice group of (single) friends that love to hang out every week or month. Or invite family members or neighbors over for a fun night.

    31) Host A Garage Sale

    Go through all the stuff in your house and put things you don’t need on sale. Because a garage sale is a great opportunity to get rid of things, earn some extra cash, and get in contact with other people. Who knows, maybe your next-door neighbor can be a new friend in retirement. And that all because you hosted a garage sale on a Sunday afternoon.

    Also, less stuff means less stress. A clean and organized house is a comfortable house to live in.

    32) Join A Club

    You can consider joining a club in retirement. This is what a lot of retirees love to do. Whether it’s a book club with neighbors, gym club, running club, or tea club. Being surrounded by like-minded people with the same interest makes your retirement days a lot more fun. And having daily social interactions is important to have in retirement. It’s good for your health and decreases the chances of getting lonely or depressed in retirement.

    33) Create A Retirement Bucket List

    Retirement is the time to do all the things you always wanted to do. And creating a bucket list is a very practical way of finding out what you want to do most with your time in retirement. Check out my article: 101 Ideas For Your Retirement Bucket List to get inspired.

    35) Go Hiking

    Nature does wonders for your physical and mental health. After a walk in the park or forest etc, you feel much better about yourself and energized for the day. So, whenever you feel down. Go outside for a walk.

    36) Become A Dog Walker

    Retirees love to be active and many become a dog walker as a new retirement hobby and job. It’s fun to be around dogs, you feel useful, you earn some extra cash and you’re outdoors and physical so that’s good for your health.

    37) Invest In Old Friendships

    Sometimes life gets in the way and you haven’t seen or spoken to some old friends in years. Not that you wanted the end the relationship. It’s just how things go. But retirement is a great time to get back in touch and invest in these old friendships. Perhaps they’re in the same position as you and you can rekindle the “flame”. You can organize a nice reunion, send them an email, or give them a call and see how things work out.

    38) Conquer A Fear

    The things you want the most in life is on the other side of fear. And because you want your retirement to be the best time of your life, that also means you probably have to conquer a fear to get there. Don’t let doubt get in the way; it never gets you closer to your dreams. Whatever fear you have from public speaking or afraid of heights, try to make an effort to conquer it. Conquering that fear is liberating and gives you more confidence and life energy than anything else.

    39) Join A Gym

    Join a gym and get (back) in shape. It’s a great place to meet other people and it’s good for your health as well.

    40) Take A Nap

    Retired means doing what you want, whenever you want. So if you want to take a nap. Take a nap.

    41) Give Yourself A Retirement Gift

    Whenever you feel bored you can clean out your closets and get rid of all the stuff you don’t need. Decluttering is freeing. It’s removing all the stuff you don’t want in your life and keeping the stuff you do want.

    And after cleaning out your closets you can donate it or sell it on eBay or during a garage sale.

    43) Date Yourself

    Try to learn to be alone. It’s a freeing and empowering experience to love your own company. Because often we want to keep ourselves busy to avoid certain memories and struggles we have. And that’s why dating yourself and spending time with yourself is much more important than dating someone else. You have to live with yourself your whole life, so you want it to be good company.

    And there is such a confidence to taking yourself out to dinner or going to the movies by yourself. Just do it and you’ll experience it’s much more fun than scary.

    44) Get A (foster) Pet

    Thinking about adopting a pet? Below are organizations where you can look online for pets that need fostering or are up for adoption. It, for sure, will keep you busy in retirement.

    45) Start Journaling

    Journaling is a great stress management tool. Journalling improves your mental clarity, it helps to solve problems and improves overall focus.     46) Watch The Sunrise & Sunset

    Go watch the most beautiful live painting in the world for free: sunset or sunrise. Set your alarm and go to a place with a beautiful sunrise or grab yourself a nice cold beer or glass of wine and watch the sunset. It makes you forget about your day and just enjoy the moment.

    47) Go Stargazing

    Another free thing to do that makes all your problems in life seem small is watching the stars at night. Go to a dark spot in your area or an official Dark Spy Park that is an area, usually surrounding a park or observatory, that restricts artificial light pollution and has a quality of starry nights. Or visit one of the best stargazing places in the USA:

    • Mauna Kea, Hawaii
    • New Mexico True Dark Skies Trail

    48) Unplug

    One of the best things you can do in retirement is switch off your phone, TV and computer just be in the moment. Time goes by so fast when we turn on the TV or scroll aimlessly over the internet. It doesn’t make us feel better, useful or worthy. And when you unplug for a couple of hours a day or one day in the week you learn to appreciate the the moments in life more.

    49) Go For A (long) Drive

    I like to just drive, turn on the radio or music and just sing a long. So I suggest just go for a drive, see where you end up and enjoy the view and blast some good music through your speakers.

    50) Create A Piece Of Art

    Working with your hands boosts your happiness. Especially when you’re building something creative. You can knit a scarf, upcycle an old piece of furniture or paint a nice painting. Just being creative is a nice way to spend your time in retirement and after finishing makes you feel good about yourself too.     When you practice gratitude, you focus on the things you already have and learn to be happy with just that. It helps you appreciate where you are in life instead of always focusing on the future.

    You can view the mind as a muscle. Just like other muscles in your body, it needs regular training to grow. So you to train the mind regularly to produce more positive thoughts.

    A great way to think more positively is to practice mediation. It helps to become more present out of your head. With meditation, you train in awareness and get a healthy perspective on your thoughts and feelings. And more and more studies show that mindful people have more stable emotions and better control their mood and behavior.

    • Start the day with positive affirmations
    • Focus on the good things even though there are small
    • Find humor in everything
    • See failures as lessons 
    • Surround yourself with positive people

    12) Focus On Your Priorities

    Don’t get distracted by meaningless and aimless activities. You haven’t worked hard to watch TV for many hours in the day. 

    Get to know the things you want to do in life and what makes you happy. And make that a daily priority in your retired life to stay happy.

    13) Don’t Compare

    It’s very tempting to compare our worst moments to other people’s best moments in life. Especially with social media, it’s hard not to go down that road. But comparing leads to unhappiness, according to Medium.com.

    The grass is always greener on the other side. But most comparisons we do are unfair. Everyone walks a different path, and there will always be another person who does it better or faster. 

    The study Hedonic Consequences of Social Comparison: A Contrast of Happy and Unhappy People show that unhappy people’s self-confidence is influenced by how others perform on a similar test. Whereas happy people showed smaller increases in self-confidence.

    If you want to stay happy in retirement, it’s best to appreciate yourself and others and stop comparing. 

    14) Practice Self-Care

    Life can be demanding and stressful. And therefore, it’s important to practice self-care to stay happy in retirement. 

    According to the dictionary, self-care is:

    1. the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health.
    2. the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. “expressing oneself is an essential form of self-care”.

    It’s necessary to function well in life and is key for boosting your mood and reducing anxiety. It also helps to keep a good relationship with yourself and others. And that’s why you need to take charge of your own self-care and make it part of your daily routine in retirement. 

    For some people, self-care means taking a nice bath. For others, it’s exercising, meditating, or going for a nature walk. Find out what activity keeps you sane and in balance and make it a habit to stay happy in retirement.

    A great idea for self-care is to do a nice wellness routine. Give yourself a skin spa with high reviewed skincare products. You’re not only feeling better but looking better as well.

    15) Follow the three R’s:

    According to the Dalai Lama, on living a good life, you must follow the three R’s:

    • Respect for yourself,
    • Respect for others and
    • Responsibility for all your actions.

    Respecting yourself leads to greater self-confidence, and respecting others creates better relationships. And taking responsibility for your actions makes you less of a victim and more in charge of your own life. This all leads to greater happiness in life.

    16) Spend Some Time Alone Every Day

    I mentioned earlier that being social is one of the best ways to stay happy in retirement. But being surrounded by people all the time isn’t necessarily a good idea. 

    You need time alone every day to clear your mind and to stay true to who you are. You can lose yourself if you’re constantly surrounded by other people. Spending alone time every day is good to recharge, reflect, and regroup. Advised by the Dalai Lama. 

    Make alone time a part of your routine in retirement. You can drink a nice cup of tea or gourmet coffee alone, taking a walk in the park, or take a nice relaxing bath,.

    One on one time with yourself is a great way to stay happy in retirement. 

    17) Don’t Watch The News

    Your view of the world is influenced by what you expose yourself to. If you watch a lot of news, violent TV shows, etc., your perspective on the world becomes more negative. 

    According to a recent study from the American Psychological Association, half of Americans experience stress, fatigue, sleep loss, and anxiety because of the news. And over the last 15 years, a lot has changed in the way we have access to news. We can be constantly informed about what happens in the country and all over the world. And that has its downside. 

    Imagine if you start your day by watching the news or reading the newspaper. You instantly are exposed to a stream of disaster reporting that will affect the rest of your day. It’s a real mood changer.

    To stay happy in retirement, you need to find a balance between staying informed and not exposing yourself too much to all kinds of news streams. So you don’t get overwhelmed or depressed. And take in worries that aren’t even your own.

    I’ve stopped watching the news many years ago. I read headlines on an independent and online newspaper, so I know what’s going on. And that’s it. I gravitate towards positive news because that makes me happier. 

    18) Live A Good And Honorable Life

    Another Rule for Living from the Dalai Lama is to live a good and honorable life. Because when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

    Now that you’ve retired, a good amount of time of your life has passed. And you can’t change anything about it. But you can always start today by living a more good and honorable life. 

    You don’t want to be on your deathbed and have sorrows and regrets for missed opportunities. If there are things you want to do, mistakes you want to straighten, or apologize for situations in the past, now is the time to do it.  

    You want to remember your life in a way that you made the best choices in difficult moments or straighten things out when you know you were in the wrong. 

    19) Be Open For Change

    Life is unpredictable. 

    According to the article What Happy People Do Differently on Psychology Today, the happiest people in life are the ones who are flexible, and they don’t hide negative emotions. 

    They acknowledge that life comes with highs and lows. Where you experience all sorts of emotions from anger, anxiety, sadness, pleasure, etc. The happiest people use negative emotions as motivation to better themselves and take action into the life they want. And use positive emotions to enjoy the times when life is good. 

    They do not become victims of the situation. They accept the situation and have the ability to mentally shift between emotional states and modify their behavior to match a situation’s demands. 

    “The ability to shift mental states as circumstances demand turns out to be a fundamental aspect of well-being.” According to Columbia University psychologist George Bonanno in Psychology Today.

    Also, the Dalai Lama advises accepting suffering as a natural quality of life. It’s when you can accept your situation; you can change the circumstances. It’s not what happens to you in life but how you react to it that matters. 

    20) Have A Loving Atmosphere At Home

    In retirement, you’re at home a lot more often. And to be able to feel good at home, you need to surround yourself with things that make you feel good. Such as music, books, plants, and accessories. Treat your home as a sanctuary, where you feel at peace.

    Sometimes it means to get rid of stuff you don’t need anymore. Because excess can cause stress. It’s no wonder that more and more people experience the positive effects of living a minimalistic lifestyle. The less stuff you have, the fewer things you need to worry about. 

    Many years ago, my family and I learned a valuable lesson on a travel trip to Kenia. An African man (who didn’t own much but was very happy) told my dad about his expensive camera. “I don’t want to own an expensive camera, because then I have another thing to worry about when it’s broken.” What a wise man.  

    In western society, we all think that we get happier if we buy or own more stuff, but actually, the opposite is true. 

    To stay happy in retirement, you can think about redesigning your house to make it more comfortable and see if you can sell or donate stuff you don’t need. And see if that makes you happier.

    The earth is here for a lot longer than your short visit. We are guests and can use the earth for our enjoyment. And that’s why we must take good care of it, according to the Dalai Lama and David Attenborough. 

    Try to recycle and do as much as you can to live more sustainably. We are now in the position to undo the damage we have done for many years.     Traveling is one of the most popular things to do in retirement. And visiting new places is exciting, and it is great for our emotional well-being and perspective on life. 

    The Dalai Lama advises to go someplace you’ve never been before once a year. It broadens our horizon and introduces us to different cultures, people. We can see with our own eyes new ways of doing things.

    23) Let Go Of Perfection

    “Being Happy Doesn’t Mean That Everything Is Perfect. It Means That You’ve Decided To Look Beyond The Imperfections.”

    “Perfectionism Is Self-Abuse Of The Highest Order”

    “Don’t Wait For Everything To Be Perfect For You To Decide To Enjoy Life.”

    And the list of quotes about perfectionism goes on and on. Also, research shows that perfectionism isn’t the way to living a happy life.

Kelly at the University of Pennsylvania, “perfectionists have a higher risk of eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression.     Working hard to achieve a goal is not perfectionism. Perfectionism is the fear of being criticized. According to John D Kelly, “when a perfectionist achieves success, they do not experience the delight of the accomplishment. Instead, there is the only relief that this time they did not fail. They lead their lives convinced that perfection is the only means to self-acceptance”.

    Try to live your retired life, not in a perfect way driven by self-acceptance but in a way that makes you happy no matter what everyone else thinks.

    24) Disconnect

    I have a love/ hate relationship with my phone. I love the fact that I have access to the world with my phone, but I also am addicted to my phone. I like to check the news, watch YouTube videos, Netflix, and scrolling through social media. Much of the time is an aimless activity and a waste of time just to occupy my mind. 

    The Erasmus Happiness Economics Research Organization in the Netherlands did a research: Does the internet make us happier? 

    The result showed that “The relationship between internet and happiness differs across aspects of internet usage and different age groups. Internet access relates positively to happiness, but the time spend on the internet often relates negatively. Young people (adolescents and young adults) tend to be less happy the more they use the internet, while seniors (65+) profit from having internet access.”

    According to the study, spending too much time on the internet can negatively influence your happiness. So disconnecting once in a while can help you to stay happy in retirement. You can try out leaving your phone in the living room when you go to bed at night, or have an internet free Sunday every week and see what happens to your mood. It’s often a habit that you need to get rid of in the first tries, and it gets better over time. 

    25) Choose Happiness

    My last tip for staying happy in retirement is choosing happiness. Every decision you make in life, however big or small, has an effect on your happiness. And you can make conscious decisions every day on everything that leads to more happiness in your life. 

    You can listen to your gut feeling with every decision you make, whether it feels good or not. If your gut feeling says yes: go for it. If your gut feeling says no: don’t do it. Your soul knows what best for you and what makes you happy. Try to listen to it as much as possible.  

    To listen to your gut, you have to silence the mind. Meditation can help you make you more aware of your thoughts and feelings. 

    You can practice following your intuition with small daily decisions, so you become more comfortable with the feeling of your gut feeling. Because what you will feed, will grow, so if you feed your intuition every day by following it what it says. Your intuition will become more present and easier to recognize.
