Someone in charge of their own retirement is likely more enthusiastic about a retirement party than someone forced to retire.

For example, a company hosting a retirement party for someone they forced out of the company can be taken as an extra kick in the nuts. On many occasions, the retiree’s coworkers, friends, and family think that a retirement party is very important because they would like to shower the retiree with gratitude, love, and honor and decide no matter what.

If you have some wiggle room in the party budget, then it can be a fun idea to invite a professional magician or a fun speaker, such as a comedian, to take the party to the next level. Other live entertainment ideas are singing waiters, dancers, circus acts, etc.

A retirement party is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration moment where the retiree closes one chapter in their life and goes into the unknown. If you (as the guest of honor) don’t want to give a speech, you are not obligated. It is your retirement party, so definitely do you, and do not fall into the trap of pleasing other people. Most of the time, it is the moment right after the surprise moment to kick the party off in a good way.

Depending on the type of retirement party, a family member, friend or coworker might also feel the need to give a speech. As retirement is a life accomplishment, it is normal for the most important people in the retiree’s life to give a speech.

For example, it is very normal at an office retirement party that the boss, manager, and/ or a coworker will give a speech to honor the retiree’s accomplishments and contributions to the company.

At a retirement party where a mix of friends, family members, and coworkers are invited, it is very normal for a mix of guests to give a speech, such as a spouse, best friend, brother/ sister, child, coworker, etc.

In all cases, discussing this idea with the host of the retirement party is probably a good idea. They can navigate all speech requests so that it fits in with the party style and schedule in the best way possible.

Perhaps the host will approach and ask you to give a speech or let you know you can’t do a speech due to logistics or a busy schedule. Or maybe the retiree asked the host not to let people speak because he/ she doesn’t like it or would like to use the time at the party to enjoy themselves and share conversations with all guests, and speeches just take up too much time.

Roast The Retiree

If the retiree has a great sense of humor or needs a little bit of payback time for all his/ her pranks, then people like to host a roast. It will definitely create a memorable and hilarious moment that people will not forget in a long time. And here are some tips if you’re planning on roasting the retiree or organizing a roast for the retiree.

Tips For A Good Roast

• Ask a maximum of 4 people to roast the retiree.
• Create an area where the retiree is in the center of attention and is visible to everyone in the room
• Estimate how funny each roast will be and schedule the order of speakers from funny to the funniest. You want the most hilarious person to be the last one and to go out with a bang.
• Each roast is no longer than 5 minutes. Keep it short, funny, and interesting for everyone. Preferably a roast should not take longer than 20 minutes. So you won’t take up to much time from the party.
• If it’s necessary, mention the no-go topics to all the speakers beforehand. Sometimes very sensitive subjects are best excluded from a roast. You want to make it fun, and a roast is also allowed to be a bit embarrassing, but you don’t want to humiliate anyone.
• Make sure the retiree has the last word. Perhaps, he or she can come up with a couple of jokes last minute to end the roast. Or take this moment to give a speech.
• Do a soundcheck beforehand, and make sure the audio is loud and clear everywhere in the venue. To make an audience laugh, they need to hear the jokes. 

Take Fun Photos

Capture the moment by taking photos. For example booking a photo booth with fun props, hiring a photographer or ask guests to take pictures and email them to you afterwards so you can create a beautiful photobook as a gift for the retiree.

Do A Flashmob

A couple of years ago doing a flashmob is what everybody did when celebrating a birthday, retirement or asking someone to marry. Now not so much anymore, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun and memorable for the retiree.
