15 Ideas: How To Celebrate Your Parents Retirement

Your parents are retiring soon, and you would like to celebrate this special occasion. Don’t look any further. In this article, you’ll find 15 ideas on how to celebrate your parent’s retirement.

    #1 Plan A Retirement Party

Celebrating retirement with a party is one of the most popular ways to celebrate retirement. Maybe your parents haven’t planned a party yet, so you can step in and do all the organizing for them. Or you can surprise them with a retirement party at their home, your home, or a different venue. Or perhaps they need a little assistance from you to help them plan their retirement party.

You can organize a small family gathering or plan a full-on dinner and dance party for co-workers, family, and friends. That’s is entirely up to your parent’s wishes and your or their budget. And if you don’t know where to start, here’s a retirement party checklist you can get for FREE:

    #2 Give A Thoughtful Gift

The best retirement gifts are the gifts that match their personality, hobby, or plans for retirement.

So if your parents are planning to travel in retirement, you can give them a travel-related gift. For example, you can give a utility they need for their RV, a destination guide, or travel gear.

You can also give them a gift related to their hobby, a personalized gift, a gift basket, or the most traditional retirement gift: a watch. Because giving a watch symbolizes time: “let’s spend more time together” or “have the best time in retirement.”

To help you out, I’ve made a list of the Top 5 Best Retirement Gifts and some extra unique gifts nobody knows about.

    #3 Do Fun Games

Life is all about making memories. And retirement is the moment to spend more time with your loved ones and make even more meaningful memories. And as a gift for your parents, you can create a new memory by giving them a fun experience they can enjoy together in retirement.

Examples of fun experiences to give your parents:

    • Cooking class
    • Gardening class
    • Date-night with dinner and movie
    • Tickets to a musical show
    • Tickets to a comedy show
    • Spa and Sauna Treatment
    • Couples massage
    • Museum tickets

    • Hot-air Balloon ride
    • Family Photoshoot

You want to make sure your parents enjoy their retirement in the best way possible. That they have something to do that they enjoy very much. Well, often retirees like to learn something new and explore new hobbies and passions in retirement. And a great gift for that is giving the gift of Masterclass.

MasterClass offers a wide variety of online masterclasses taught by the best in the world. From a cooking Masterclass by Gordon Ramsey, Tennis Masterclass by Serena Williams, or a writing Masterclass taught by Dan Brown, etc. And you can give your parents an All-Acces Pass to all the Masterclasses on the platform so they both can learn something new or get better at their hobby. In my opinion, it’s the number one best gift for retirement.

    #5 Hold A Speech

You can hold a speech to celebrate your parent’s retirement. You can do this at a retirement party or another social gathering to show your parents how much you appreciate them.

You can say a couple of words during a toast or create an entire speech. This can be heartfelt, very serious or filled with jokes. Whatever matches your personality and the relationship you have with your parents.

In the speech, you can mention:

    • highlights of their career,
    • successes & achievements,
    • stories about their personality,
    • tell jokes,
    • funny anecdotes
    • or anything else that will make your parents feel loved and celebrated.

Before you prepare your speech, it’s best to know beforehand where you’re going to be speeching and who your audience is. So, you make no mistakes with the content and tone of your speech. You want to celebrate your parents and not unintentionally embarrass them or hurt their feelings.

    #6 Plan A Roast

Planning a roast is the perfect way to celebrate your parents if dark comedy and making fun of each other is their thing.

When you’re planning a roast for your parents, it’s best to ask a couple of more people to accompany you to the roast. Preferably from different areas in their life: co-workers, friends, family members. Especially if the room is also a mix of different people. This way, your parents and the audience will get to watch a full-on roast from every aspect of their life. Everyone will be more engaged, and that will only add to the experience and quality of the roast.

    Tips for a good roast:

    • Invite a maximum of 4-5 people to roast your parents.
    • Create an area, so your parents are the center of attention and visible for everyone in the room.
    • Estimate how funny the roasts will be and plan the order of speakers from funny to the funniest. So the funniest person is the last one.
    • Give each person a maximum of 5 minutes speaking time to keep it short, sweet, and interesting for everyone. Preferably a roast should not take longer than 20 minutes.
    • If necessary, mention the no go areas to all the speakers beforehand. Sometimes very sensitive subjects are best to be excluded from a roast.
    • Make sure your parents have the last word if they want to.
    • Do a soundcheck beforehand and make sure that you can hear the speaker loud and clear from all areas in the room.

    #7 Create A Video

Another way to celebrate your parent’s retirement is by creating a heartfelt or funny video. Which you can show them in a private, social gathering or at their retirement party.

You can create a video together with your brothers, sisters, and grandchildren. Or also have other people join in: co-workers, family, and friends. And this can be very easy to do:

    #8 Create A (photo) Scrapbook

A great retirement gift is a collection of memories. And to celebrate this major milestone in your parent’s life you can create a scrapbook with memories of their life.

It can be a book with photos from them in their childhood leading up to the moment of now. Or a scrapbook with messages, pictures, and other things about memorable moments in their life. From funny anecdotes, and notes, to stories and photos. And you can ask other family members, friends, and co-workers to join in and give it collectively.

Some of the best retirement gifts are not the most expensive gifts but the most thoughtful ones. So, if you can produce a retirement gift down memory lane for your parents, you will definitely make their day, month, or year. And be an item they can browse through every now and then in retirement.

#9 Send Them On A Holiday

Retirement is an exciting chapter in many people’s lives. But many retirees find it also a bit scary and feel disorientated when they suddenly have all the time in the world. The loss of structure, routine, and purpose can overwhelm them, and they feel lost and don’t know how to plan their retirement days.

If this is something you foresee happening, you can give them a retirement present by helping them and guiding them into the transition of retirement. It can be your way of celebrating their retirement. And what better retirement gift is a gift that helps your parents to an enjoyable and purposeful retirement.

Because a combination of daily physical, mental, and social activities is the key to a healthy and happy retirement.

But you don’t want your parents to do activities to fill up time and be busy. You want your parents to get fulfillment in life: to have a purposeful retirement. And the lack of purpose is what many retirees struggle with. But how to find your purpose?

If your kids and grandchildren live further away, make an effort to visit them more often. Or you can make the decision to move closer to them. But don’t make a rushed decision. Talk to your children about it first. And think about how you want to spend time in retirement. You can’t rely on your children all the time. You want to have a bigger social circle and more things to do in your place of residence.

And if your children and grandchildren live close by you can organize more family visits. You can take on the responsibility to host weekly family brunches or dinners. Or you can help your children with babysitting your grandchildren if that’s something you love to do.

    #7 Start a new hobby

One of the best things you can give yourself in retirement is having something fun to do. So celebrate your retirement by going on the quest to find a new hobby and buy the essentials you need.

Having a hobby doesn’t just have to be a time filler in retirement. It can turn into a passion that gets you excited to get up every morning. It will boost the quality of your life and gives you a sense of fulfillment. And that’s why a hobby is so important to have and can be the best gift you can give yourself to celebrate retirement.

But trying to figure out where to find a new hobby in retirement can be tough. So that’s why I am going to help you out with a couple of tips.

Tips how to find your hobby in retirement:

Go back to your childhood – If you don’t know where to begin, you can start and think back to what you loved doing as a kid. In your childhood, you were wild and free, and you didn’t do anything unless you really loved it. So, the chance you still have the same interests are pretty big. Or think about what the things were you enjoy doing as a child and see what the common factor is.

Try a couple of ideas – you don’t know if you like something if you don’t try it out and see how you respond to it. Maybe you’ve got a couple of ideas in mind, or you can find inspiration on Pinterest, a book store, and see what captures your attention. Sometimes you have to experience and physically see an option to get curious.

Choose a hobby that makes you forget about your day – As a child, you didn’t know what time it was when you did something you love doing. And perhaps as an adult, you’ve had similar experiences. So if you don’t know what your hobby looks like, then do something that makes you forget the time. An activity like that is a stress-reliever and helps you unwind and be worry-free. And that is a great activity to have in retirement.

Look at what you want to improve about yourself – If you’re the type of person who wants to learn, educate themselves, or always want to better themselves. You can look for a hobby that fits that criteria. This can be anything from learning a new language, personal development to achieving a life goal.

Retirement is the time to chase your dreams and do the things you’ve always wanted to do. And you can celebrate the start of your retirement by doing something you (or others) never thought you would do.

Go into retirement with a bang by doing something exciting, scary, and out of your comfort zone. Because getting out of your comfort zone has so many benefits:

    • it creates just enough good stress to ramp up your focus, pace, and drive,
    • it helps you to be more productive,

    • it helps you to be more flexible when unexpected things happen in the future,
    • it boosts your self-confidence,

    • adds a spark to your life,
    • makes you feel alive,
    • and it contributes to more happiness in your life.

So if this doesn’t convince you, maybe these ideas will inspire you.

Ideas to get out of your comfort zone:

You can consider moving to another location (city, state, or country). And the reasons for that can be:

    • to be closer to your family,

    • live in a different climate

    Other life-changes can be:

    • Change your daily routines
    • Change your diet

Because when will it ever be the right time?

Celebrate your retirement by fulfilling one of your bucket-list-dreams. And don’t let fear get in the way.

    #14 Commit to a new life-goal

Goals in life are important. Otherwise, you don’t have direction in life, and you can become sad or even depressed. So, setting a life-goal and committing to it is one of the best steps you can take to experience happiness in retirement.

    Goals are essential because:

    • You move your life forward,
    • You push yourself out of your comfort zone,
    • You can make dreams reality,
    • It fuels your ambition,
    • It makes you feel useful, worthy and accomplished,
    • It boosts your self-esteem,
    • It motivates you to be better,
    • You prioritize your time better,
    • It gives you the inspiration necessary to aim for things we never thought was possible,
    • You can live your retirement to the fullest.

Find out what goal you want to achieve and write this goal down on paper. Because, according to a study by writing your goal down on paper, you’ll have a better chance of achieving that goal, then if you don’t.

Once you have written down your goal, you can start making a plan. You can work backward from your goal and create a timeline with milestones, smaller steps, and weekly/ daily actions. You cut down your goal in more manageable chunks, and this helps you not feel overwhelmed. And makes the goal more mentally achievable.

    #15 Find fulfillment

When you retire, it’s sometimes hard to find fulfillment. But finding fulfillment is the ultimate celebration of your retirement.

Fulfillment is a feeling of happiness and satisfaction.

You get fulfillment in retirement by:

    1. Get to know yourself
    2. Accept yourself & your reality
    3. Take charge of your life
    4. Find your new passion
    5. Practice personal development
    6. Know your core values
    7. Explore new things
    8. Contribute to something bigger than yourself
    9. Question yourself
    10. Calm your mind
    11. Listen to your intuition

    #1 Make a budget

Before you start planning, you want to know what the budget for the retirement party is. Because you can’t do any proper planning without you knowing how much to spend.

If you’re the one hosting the retirement party at the office for a co-worker, ask your direct supervisor about how much you’re allowed to spend. Or if you’re the retiree hosting or a family member or friend from the retiree, ask yourself how much you want to spend on the retirement party.

Once you know what the party budget is, you can make better decisions in where to host the party, who to invite, and what extra things you can afford to make it more memorable.

It’s helpful to create a spreadsheet with a detailed budget plan in which you can keep track of how much you spend or have budgeted per category (venue, food & drinks, entertainment, invitations, decorations, party extras, retirement gift).

#2 Choose the type of celebration

After the budget is clear, you can make a decision about what kind of celebration you want to host: brunch, lunch, dinner, dance party? There are so many different things you can do.

If you’re hosting the retirement party for someone else, think about how the retiree would like to celebrate. Ask the retiree or close family members what he/ she would like. Some people want to have one big retirement party with everyone involved, from co-workers to friends and family members. While other retirees prefer a small social gathering with only a couple of loved ones. And like to keep work and private separate.

Also, as a host, make no mistake that the retirement party is for the retiree. They have to feel celebrated in a way that they feel most comfortable. So, don’t let your own preferences overrule the retiree’s wishes.

    Celebration ideas:

    • Sunday Breakfast or Brunch
    • Lunch Party
    • Pool party

    #3 Pick a date

Once you know what kind of retirement party you want to plan, you can select the date of the party.

    Tips for selecting the date:

    • Plan the party on a date that is very close to the actual retirement date. The further away, the less likely people will come.
    • Keep the guests in mind while planning the date of the retirement party. A weekday afternoon or evening only fits people who are retired as well. Or fits best to a corporate retirement party. Otherwise, the weekend is best to plan the retirement party.
    • Check if your preferred venue is available on that date.
    • Pick a date that doesn’t clash with important other events at work or within the circle of friends and family.

    #4 Select venue

Next up is selecting the venue. You can host a retirement party in all sorts of locations: at home, restaurant, bar, office, function hall. It depends on your budget and the type of celebration which location you choose as the venue of the party.

If you don’t want the hassle at home, you can select a venue to host the party. But that’s probably more expensive. Or your home is too small to fit in the number of people you want to invite. So take the budget, the number of people you want to invite, and your preferences into consideration when selecting the venue. And check if the date you picked is available.

    #5 Create a guest list

After you know the budget, the type of party, selected the venue, and picked the date, you can start creating the guest list. And some people struggle with who to invite. So this is the most straightforward answer I can give you.

You base the guest list on the type of retirement party you’re planning:

    • Corporate: invite all co-workers. A small company invites all co-workers from the office. A larger company only invites direct co-workers (from the department).
    • Private: depending on the size and budget, you invite all the important people in the retiree’s life (family, friends, close co-workers).

But to learn more about who to invite to your retirement party, you can read my article: Who To Invite To A Retirement Party: An Etiquette Guide.

#6 Choose A Theme or Dress code

You can host a retirement party with a fun theme or choose the appropriate dress code for the occasion. You can customize the invitation to the theme and mention the dress code in the invitation. So, guests know what to wear.

It depends on the type of retirement party if a fun theme is suitable. A Hawaii theme is probably not appropriate for a formal corporate retirement party. And perhaps the country club doesn’t want everyone dressing up as superheroes. Or maybe they do 😉 But that will be the exception of the rule.

So, take the location, guest list, and wishes of the retiree into consideration when selecting a suitable theme and dress code.

    Party Theme Ideas:

    • Back to the Birthyear of the retiree
    • Back to the starting year of retiree’s career
    • Back to the ’50s
    • Back to the ’60s
    • Back to the ’70s
    • Back to the ’80s
    • Back to the ’90s
    • Favorite hobby
    • Black and White Party (Everyone is black, and the retiree is white)
    • The first job of retiree’s
    • Travel the World
    • Summer
    • Winter
    • Autumn
    • Spring
    • Tropical
    • Dress as the retiree
    • Casino Party
    • Favorite Movie
    • Bohemian
    • Hawaii
    • Favorite Sports Team
    • Masquerade Ball
    • Western
    • Hollywood
    • Mardi Grass

    The most common dress codes:

    • White tie – Women: floor-length formal gown and gloves; hair is typically worn in an up-do. Men: suit with a vest and white bow tie.
    • Black tie – Women: floor-length formal gown. Men: suit with a black bow tie.
    • Lounge suit – Women: formal gown. Men: suit with a tie.
    • Cocktail – Women: an above-the-knee hem is appropriate, or an evening pantsuit. Men: suit, tie optional.
    • Smart casual – Women: there are no rules. Flats or heels are acceptable. Men: jeans, chinos or suit pants with a shirt or dressed-up T-shirt; no ties.

    #7 Send Out Invitations

The next step is to send out the invitations. Preferably you want to send the invitations 3-4 weeks before the retirement party date. Or even earlier if you have planned a big party and want as many people to attend. And depending on the type of party, you can send out a paper invitation, an email invitation, or create a video invitation.

    Invitation Etiquette Tips:

    • Ask for RSVP so you can plan with the correct number of people.
    • Mention the dress code, so people know what to wear.
    • Specify if the invitation includes a plus one.
    • Share the number of years that the retiree has worked. This helps your guests write their retirement card for the honoree.
    • If it’s the intention that others contribute to the party, make sure these arrangments are clear to all who are participating before you send out the invitation.
    • If there are specific arrangements included or excluded, mention this in the invitation. Make sure your guests are adequately informed.

Do you mention gifts in the invitation?

Some people say it’s not appropriate to mention gifts in the invitation. Their advice is to mention it only when you don’t want gifts. As a retiree who sends out the invitations, it can come across as a bit greedy to mention gifts. Therefore it’s best not to mention gifts or ask to donate to your favorite charity as an option. Or if someone RSVPs and ask about what to give, you can always suggest something.

Another way to bypass it is to mention the retirement plans in the invitation along with other information like the amount of worked years, etc. So the guests have a bit more detailed information and come up with a great gift themselves.

If you host the party for someone else, you can add a gifting description, so guests know what kind of retirement gift to bring. And because you want to celebrate the retiree, it isn’t strange to mention or give a hint towards a great retirement gift.

Overall, it’s customary to bring a gift for the retiree to a retirement party. But you can’t expect everyone to bring a gift. A close co-worker is more likely to bring a gift than someone who has worked with the retiree for only a couple of weeks or days.

Also, the type of retirement party influences gifting, as well. A card with best wishes is sufficient for a small and short gathering at the office. And a thoughtful or expensive gift is suitable for a close friend coming to a retirement (dinner) party.

#8 Inventory on speeches or surprises

When the date of the retirement party is coming closer, you want to do an inventory on which people are planning to give a speech, toast, or have a surprise planned. This way, you can make a schedule and organize the essentials. For example, a good sound system with a microphone(s) for speeches and toasts and a beamer or TV screen for video surprises.

You can ask guests to let you know before a specific date if they have something arranged for the retiree. This way, you have enough time to plan and organize the necessities. And make sure you ask each group to help you with the inventory (co-workers, family, and friends). So, you don’t miss out on people.

#9 Prepare a speech, toast, or fun activity

As a host, it’s customary to do a speech or toast at the beginning of the party. This can be very small where you welcome the guests, honor the retiree, and let everyone know what to expect.

Or, if you would like to honor the guest, even more, you can prepare a longer speech or organize a fun activity. Here are some ideas:

    • Hold a quiz about the retiree
    • Plan to roast the retiree (only appropriate if the retiree loves a bit of dark humor and is happy to retire)
    • Give a (longer) speech
    • Guess who it is: ask guests to bring a photo of themselves as a child. And hang it up somewhere, and everyone has to guess who it is.
    • Bucket List: Let the guests fill a bucket with ideas for the retiree’s bucket list.
    • Play 30 seconds game; a made-up version about the retiree.
    • Show a video of the retiree’s life/ career highlights
    • Show a video with messages from all the guests
    • Show a funny video made by guests: flashmob, music video to their favorite song, retirement movie trailer.

    #10 Organize party extras

If the budget allows it, you can organize finishing touches that make the party extra special. And here are some ideas you can organize:

    • Customized decorations: retiree’s photo on balloons, cake, etc.
    • Organize lawn games (giant Jenga, bean toss, corn hole, high striker)
    • Rent a photo booth with props
    • Rent a (slo-mo) video booth with props
    • Rent a karaoke machine
    • Rent an inflatable game or obstacle course
    • Create (personalized) party favors, so when guests leave the party, they bring a memory home.
    • Book a photographer or videographer
    • Fireworks

    #11 Get a thoughtful gift

As the host, you can present a thoughtful gift to the retiree at the party. You can do this with a group of guests and collect money or give a gift personally.

And the best retirement gifts are thoughtful gifts down memory lane, for example:

    • Scrapbook with a collection of personal messages, anecdotes, and photos from all the guests about favorite memories of the retiree.
    • framed group photo
    • award (medal, plague)
    • customized piece of art

Other best retirement gifts are gifts that match the retiree’s plans for retirement, for example:

    • Give travel gear when the retiree has plans to travel in retirement.
    • Give gear that helps with his favorite hobby.
    • Give the most traditional gift for retirement: a watch. To symbolize the time. As a company: You gave your time to us, now we give you time. As a family member: To spend more time together. As a friend: Have the time of your life.

#12 Do a last (sound) check

You’ve been working very hard to organize the best retirement party, so make sure you do an extra check before the party to know everything is set.

Doing a sound or video check brings you less stress at the moment of the party. Because technology can abandon you from time to time, so make sure you’re prepared and did everything you could to make it perfect.

Check with the caterer if they didn’t forget something. Check with the restaurant if the number of people matches your list of people. Check how long the speeches will be of the person’s speech that night. I’m a perfectionist, so double-checking is my thing ;).

But also be aware that not everything will go according to your plan. And to be able to enjoy the party as well, you need to let go and attack problems when they occur and not worry about it too much beforehand.

    #13 Be a great host

You can organize the best retirement party ever, but if you act like a douchebag: people will remember that even more than how much fun they had at the party. Therefore be a great host at the party, and here are a couple of tips to help you out.

    Host Etiquette Tips:

    • A retirement party is a life celebration of the retiree. Let the attention go to the retiree, so they feel appreciated.
    • Keep conversations positive and avoid talking about family or work-related problems at the party.
    • Avoid burning bridges with co-workers and bosses at your retirement party. You want to stay away from anything that can harm your reputation or the company’s reputation.
    • If the party is a formal event, it’s best to limit drinking too much alcohol. A drunk host at a formal event can be embarrassing. But if the party is intended for everyone to enjoy themselves: go ahead and let loose.
    • The host of the party should not expect or ask anyone to pay for her own meal. When you invite someone, you pay the bill. Unless, when it’s discussed beforehand and mentioned in the invitation.
    • Give a (little) toast or speech to start the party, honor the retiree, and let the guests know what to expect.
    • Try to socialize with as many people as you can. Don’t focus too much on one group of people, but spread your attention, so everyone feels included and welcomed.

You’re planning a retirement party, and you’re probably wondering who you should invite? Don’t look any further; I’m here to help you out.

Depending on the retirement party, you invite the following guests:

    • Corporate: invite all co-workers. A small company invites all co-workers from the office. A larger company only invites direct co-workers.
    • Private: depending on the size and budget, you invite all the important people in the retiree’s life (family, friends, close co-workers).

These are just the basics. To learn more about who to invite to a retirement party, continue reading!

Who To Invite To A Retirement Party Guide

A retirement party is a celebration of a big milestone in life. You celebrate two things: the end of a career and the beginning of an exciting new chapter in life: retirement. So, the goal of a good retirement party is to celebrate the retiree’s career and personal achievements in life. You make sure that the retiree feels appreciated, the retirement party captured his/her personality, and that everyone is included that plays a part in the retiree’s life.

There are two different retirement parties: corporate and private retirement parties. And the guestlist for both is different, which I will explain to you below.

Who To Invite To A Corporate Retirement Party?

Corporate retirement parties can vary from formal dinner parties to more casual social gatherings at the office. It depends on different factors who you should invite. So, there isn’t an easy straight forward answer. But I’m going to describe a couple of factors that can influence the guest list, so you can make a more informed decision for your retirement party.

It depends on the size and culture of the company, whom you should invite to the retirement party. As I mentioned earlier, a smaller company can invite all co-workers from the office. While a larger company might want to keep the guest list to direct co-workers from the retiree’s department, but that isn’t always the case.

The job position of the retiree and budget are factors that influence the guest list as well. A retiring CEO has probably a bigger retirement party budget and can invite more people than someone lower in the hierarchy of the company. And a CEO maybe wants to invite larger clients and the board of directors. And a company with a more informal culture can organize a retirement party that includes spouses or close family members.

So, to know who to invite you to need to know:

    • the budget of the retirement party,
    • the job position of the retiree,
    • the number of (close) co-workers of the retiree,
    • and the company policies and culture about retirement parties.

When you have a clear view of these specifics, you can make up your retirement party guest list.

The most important rule is, don’t exclude anyone from the retirement party invitation list. Include all co-workers that worked with the retiree over the years, from direct co-workers to supervisors and managers. A corporate retirement party is not the time to single out co-workers based on personal differences. You preferably want to keep things neutral around a retirement party. It’s a celebration and not an opportunity for a negative discussion afterward.

Who To Invite To A Private Retirement Party?

A private or personal retirement party is any retirement party hosted outside of work. So the invitation list is a little easier to make. It depends on who is hosting and the budget of the retirement party who you should invite. But overall, the rule is to include all people that are important in the retiree’s life. That is a list of family members, friends, and close co-workers that became friends of the retiree.

The budget also influences the guest list. A small budget means a small gathering of the closest loved-ones. And with a bigger budget, you can invite more people and have a more extravaganze celebration. Maybe you come to a conclusion it’s better to host at home instead of at an expensive venue so you can invite more guests. Or you don’t want the hassle at home, and that means you need to downsize the guest list. It’s for you to consider what fits your situation best.

    When It’s Your Retirement Party

When you’re the one retiring and hosting the party, then it’s totally up to you who you want to invite. Maybe you just want to have a small lunch or dinner with your loved ones at home or celebrate it with a bigger group of people at a venue. You’re the one retiring, so you’re in charge of the guest list. Don’t let outside pressure intervene with your retirement party plans.

Don’t feel obligated to invite everyone, but also don’t make a mistake in burning bridges or ruining relationships by not inviting certain people. Take it into consideration and balance out what’s more important to you when you make up your guest list.

When You Host A Retirement Party For Someone

It can be a bit different when someone else is retiring, and you’re hosting the retirement party for him or her. You want to make sure you invite everyone that the retiree is close to. So make sure to double-check with the retiree or if it’s a surprise party check with their spouse, best friend, or close co-worker that you didn’t forget about anyone. You don’t want to be responsible for ruining an important relationship by not inviting someone.

How To Invite To A Retirement Party

Once you made your guest list, you can send out the invitations. And what kind of invitation is appropriate depends on the type of party. A paper invitation will be the most suitable for a corporate, formal dinner party. But if the company values being sustainable, it’s best to send an email invitation.

Also, the personality of the retiree can influence your choice of invitation. An environmentalist prefers email invitations. And a more traditional and old-fashioned retiree prefers the more traditional invitations.

    Invitation Etiquette Tips:

    • Send out invitations at least 3-4 weeks before the retirement party date.
    • Ask for RSVP so you can plan with the correct number of people.
    • Mention the dress code, so people know what to wear.
    • Plan the party on a date that is very close to the actual retirement date. The further away from the date, the less likely people will come.
    • All retirement party invitations should specify if the invitation includes a plus one.
    • In the invitations, you can share the number of years that the retiree has worked. This helps your guests write their retirement card for the honoree.
    • Keep the invited guests in mind while planning the date of the retirement party. A weekday afternoon or evening only fits people who are retired as well. Or fits best to a corporate retirement party with co-workers. Otherwise, the weekend is best to plan the retirement party.
    • If it’s the intention that others contribute to the party, make sure these arrangments are clear to all who are participating before you send out the invitation.
    • If there are specific arrangements included or excluded, mention this in the invitation. For example, some parties only cover the drinks and some snacks. So having a meal is at your own cost. Or the company doesn’t cover payment of dinner for additional guests. Make sure your guests are properly informed.

Do you mention gifts in the invitation?

Some people say it’s not appropriate to mention gifts in the invitation. They say you only mention it in the invitation if you don’t want gifts. As a retiree who sends out the invitations, it can come across as a bit greedy to mention gifts. If you want to avoid that, then it’s best to not mention gifts in the invitation. But know that a lot of people also like to do a gift registry for their parties. So, it’s up to you.

To workaround that is when someone RSVPs and asks about what to give, you can mention your plans for retirement. And give a couple of gift ideas or things that you need to enjoy your retirement plans better. This way, the guest asks about it themselves and you can give suggestions in the right direction.

But if you host the party for someone else you can add a gifting description so guests know what kind of retirement gift to give the retiree. And because you like to celebrate the retiree it isn’t strange to mention or give a hint towards a great retirement gift.

How To Celebrate Your Father’s Retirement: 16 Ideas

Your father is retiring, and you would like to celebrate this major milestone in his life. Well, you’ve come to the right place because I’m here to help you out. I’ve listed 16 ideas on how to celebrate your father’s retirement in this article, so keep reading.

    #1 Organize A Retirement Party

Organizing a retirement party is probably one of the most popular ways to celebrate someone’s retirement. If your father hasn’t planned a party yet, you can step in and do all the organizing for him. Or surprise him with a surprise party at home, your home, or a different venue.

There isn’t a typical retirement party protocol to follow. You can organize a small family gathering or plan a full-on dinner and dance party for co-workers, family, and friends. That’s is entirely up to you and your budget.

    #2 Give A Thoughtful Gift

You can give a thoughtful gift to make your father’s retirement more memorable. And the best retirement gifts are personalized gifts or gifts that match his plans for retirement. For example, if he plans on traveling, you can give him travel gear as a retirement gift.

One of the coolest retirement gifts out there is the gift of Masterclass. Give your father something fun and interesting to do in retirement. Help him make the most out of his retirement.

MasterClass is an online education platform with the world’s most successful and famous teachers: Gordon Ramsey, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Hans Zimmer, Stephen Curry, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Chin, Serena Williams, Dan Brown, etc.

Masterclass offers classes (for any skill level) taught by the best in the world: from cooking, acting, writing, poker, music, sports to science, and so much more. He will have access to all masterclasses on the platform.

    #3 Give A Speech

You can give a speech at an already planned retirement party or social gathering to show your father how proud you are of him and how much you appreciate him.

You can mention highlights of his career or keep it more informal with jokes, stories, or loving words on a personal level. It’s best to know beforehand where you’re going to be speeching and who your audience is. So, you make no mistakes with the content and tone of your speech. You want to celebrate your father and not unintentionally embarrass him.

    #4 Plan A Roast

Planning a good roast is always a lot of fun. Definitely, if your father is the type of person who appreciates a good roast and is a fan of dark comedy.

Try to ask a couple of more people, preferably from different areas in his life (co-worker, friend, family member), to accompany you in the roast of your father. This way, your father and the audience will get to watch a full-on roast of every aspect of his life. Everyone will be more engaged, and that will only add to the experience and quality of the roast.

    Tips for a good roast:

    • Invite a maximum of 4-5 people who roast your father
    • Create decor, so your father is the center of attention
    • Plan the order of speakers from funny to the funniest
    • Give each person a maximum of 5 minutes of speaking time to keep things interesting for the audience
    • Discuss the no-go areas beforehand. If that’s necessary
    • Schedule time so your father can have the last word
    • Do a soundcheck beforehand and make sure everyone in the rooms can hear the roasters.

    #6 Create A (photo) Scrapbook

Life is all about making memories, and a great retirement gift is a collection of all these memories in one place: a scrapbook your father can look into every now and then in retirement.

You can create a book with messages, pictures, and other things about memorable moments in his life. And ask co-workers, family, and friends to send in content and photos about their best memories, funny anecdotes, and great stories of your father.

Some of the best retirement gifts are not the most expensive gifts but the most thoughtful ones. And because life is not about having great things, but about collecting memories with great people in life. And if you can produce a retirement gift down memory lane for your father, you will definitely make his day, month, or year.

    #7 Hold A Quiz

Celebrating a father’s retirement is celebrating his life. And you can put him in the spotlight by holding a quiz about his life. You can create a quiz where your father has to answer the questions under the pressure of an audience watching. Or the audience has to answer questions about your father, while your father is sitting in the same room.

This can lead to funny and sometimes surprising situations. And people knowing only one side of your father will know him even better after finishing the quiz. To make your audience more engaged you can hand out a piece of prop where they can answer the questions with.

    #8 Plan A Trip Together

You can plan a trip together with your father to celebrate his retirement. Now that he’s retired you probably can spend more time together so why not grab this opportunity to travel somewhere great together.

Ideas for a trip with your father:

    • Plan a road trip
    • Plan an RV trip
    • Visit family together
    • Plan a trip down memory lane (previous holiday destinations, birthplace, former places of residence
    • Go on a cruise
    • Go on a safari in Kenia

#11 Fulfill A Bucket List Dream

Fulfill one of your father’s dreams by checking off one of his bucket list items together. Or give him a bucket list retirement gift. Perhaps, he has an existing bucket list on his computer which you can (secretly) download. Or he has mentioned a couple of things about his dreams or ultimate kick-the-bucket items over the course of his life.

You can surprise him with a trip or bucket list experience or plan it together. The planning and looking forward to something is half the fun. And it doesn’t have to be an over-the-top expensive experience. If you don’t have the budget for it, you can get creative. Often the thought counts more than the gift itself.

If your father doesn’t have a bucket list you can create one for him as a gift for his retirement. Check out: 101+ Ideas For Retirement Bucket List.

#12 Start A Charity In His Honor

A very thoughtful way of celebrating your father is starting a charity in his honor. Perhaps he has offered his services to so many people in need he has built up a reputation that can be honored by starting a charity for a cause close to his heart.

Keep in mind that starting and maintaining a charity is a lot of work. You need a good plan, register as a 501(c)(3) and establish an advisory board. And plan to do fundraising events year-round or annually. You need to have multiple people involved that are motivated to keep things going. So, make sure you have a long-term plan ready with committed people before you announce anything to your father.

    #13 Give A Pet

If your father is an animal lover then you can give him a pet for his retirement. Perhaps, he is alone and you worry that he will become lonely. Then a pet is a great retirement gift. But make sure you ask if he wants to have a responsibility like that before you hand him a furry little puppy.

If owning a pet is too much responsibility. Or if your father doesn’t want to be tied up too much in retirement, you can apply him as a pet babysitter via Pet it USA or Petsitter.

    #14 Hand Out An Award

Retirement is a major milestone in life. So because we hand out awards on so many occasions in life. Why not with retirement? It’s often done by the company to give an award to a retiree, but you can hand out an award to your father as well.

This can be anything from a medal with the text “Best Dad in the World” engraved to a piece of customized art he can put in his house. You can give it on a more serious note or give an award as a joke. That’s up to you.

    #15 Bake A Cake

If you know your way around in the kitchen and if your fathers love your bakeries and cooking. Then you probably cannot pass this opportunity in his life to not bake a cake.

You can surprise him with a cake (for his co-workers) on the last day of his work. Or bake a beautiful cake for his retirement party.

    #16 Plan A Prank

In my family, we like to prank. That’s our way to show our appreciation and love. And maybe that’s a great way for you as well to celebrate your father’s retirement. It can be a little tricky and can get out of hand if you don’t do it right or to the wrong person. So before you pull any great pranks, think first.

But if you know your father and your family will have a big laugh about it, pull a major prank and make sure this is one to remember. And involve multiple people to make the prank bigger and better.

How To Get Fulfillment In Retirement? Read This!

Everyone looks for fulfillment in life, but it’s sometimes hard to find fulfillment (again) when you retire. Your life changes drastically, and you can feel lost. And there maybe comes a time where you ask yourself: How do I get fulfillment from retirement?

As a general rule, you can find fulfillment in retirement by focusing on your goals and intuition. Many retirees find fulfillment when sharing their experience, knowledge, and time by taking on a volunteering, teaching, or mentoring role. Rekindle old hobbies and focus on exploring new things to do.

In this article, I share in-depth information on how you can get fulfillment in retirement. You’ll find expert tips exercises, and we’ll explain more about what fulfillment actually is. Ready to learn how to find fulfillment as a retiree? Let’s dig in!

How To Find Fulfillment In Retirement?

Having a feeling of fulfillment means that you feel happy and satisfied. However, retirement is a life-changing event, and many people struggle with finding fulfillment in retirement. The solution might sound very simple and is true, easier said than done. You must have a purpose. A life goal, something you get excited about. Without a plan or purpose, it is much more challenging to find that feeling of fulfillment in your retirement.

A purpose or goal doesn’t mean that you have to focus on things that are hard to reach. Of course, you can focus on enjoying your leisure in retirement. Maybe that’s even a goal for you, to fully enjoy your time as a retiree. A purpose can be as simple as that.

For many of us, retirement is also a time to reflect. To focus on what you always wanted to do. Sharing knowledge and experience by helping others. These can all be goals that help you find fulfillment in retirement. However, the most important thing is that you stay true to yourself. It’s about you finding fulfillment and not filling someone else’s goals.

So before I share the expert tips on finding fulfillment in retirement, let’s take a quick look at what fulfillment actually means.

    What Is Fulfillment?

In my quest to come up with the best answer on how to get fulfillment in retirement, I wanted to first know what fulfillment exactly is. Because you need to know what it is to know what to chase. And people often confuse fulfillment with pleasure, and that’s not what fulfillment really is.

You can find pleasure in a lot of (external) things, but finding fulfillment is something much deeper (within yourself). And this is what the definition of fulfillment is according to Vocabulary:

Fulfillment is a feeling of happiness and satisfaction. It’s also the completion of something, like the fulfillment of a promise.

This word has two related meanings. In terms of emotions, fulfillment is a happy, contented feeling. Many people feel fulfillment from being a parent, having a great job, or graduating from school. People often feel fulfillment when something is completed, whether it’s a goal or a dream or repair work that you’ve been waiting on. This leads to the other meaning of fulfillment — the act of finishing or doing something that was promised.

    Definitions Of Fulfillment

    1) the act of consummating something (a desire or promise etc.)
Types: self-fulfillment, self-realization (the fulfillment of your capacities)
Type of: consummation (the act of bringing to completion or fruition)
    2) the feeling of satisfaction at having achieved your desires
Type of: satisfaction (the contentment one feels when one has fulfilled a desire, need, or expectation)

In short, fulfillment is our direct guide to what is most important to us. And to get fulfillment in retirement, we need to know our desires and life goals. And that’s not the goals culture, society, or family put on us. It’s achieving the life goals important to you as an individual. And therefore, you need to be brave and sometimes go up against the stream.

Get To Know Yourself To Find Fulfillment

Getting fulfillment is not a state of mind you once achieve, and you’ll set for the rest of your life. It’s not a destination; it’s an ongoing life journey of self-discovery, growth, and contentment with your position in life. And because your life is continuously changing, it significantly changes a lot going into retirement. Therefore getting fulfillment in retirement is consistently achieving goals that align with your dreams and desires. And to do that, you need to know yourself and your dreams.

So to look for fulfillment is turning inside and not chasing after external sources. A lot of people do. You can do many things in life, keep yourself busy and productive, and not feel fulfilled. So it’s important to know that getting fulfillment comes from within you and not from an external source like status, money, or being able to afford the biggest car or house.

It’s not what you do in life but the reason why you do things.

After a major life change like your retirement, you can feel a sense of loss of your identity. After working 30 or 40+ years within a specific industry or job position, you’ve come accustomed to identifying yourself to what you do. Instead of who you are as a person with many talents, qualities, flaws, and characteristics.

Therefore it’s essential to get to know yourself again and get in touch with the person you were before you’ve become the marketing manager, CEO, or school teacher. Rediscover your identity and get to know the human being behind the job description.

It can help to do a couple of tests:

You can also list your talents, strengths, weaknesses, and ask your family and friends to do the same.

    Accept Yourself and Your Reality

As mentioned above, fulfillment can also be translated into being satisfied and content with your position in life. And to feel satisfied and content is only possible if you accept yourself and your reality. Because happiness can only exist in acceptance.

To get fulfillment in retirement is to find acceptance. And finding acceptance is:

    • seeing things for what they really are
    • being brutally honest
    • admit your mistakes
    • accepting your talents and your flaws
    • letting go of resistance
    • take responsibility
    • own your outcomes
    • forgive yourself
    • forgive others

Accepting yourself is a difficult process because it goes against your training, education, and culture. You’ve been told how you should be; nobody said to you that you are good as you are. And it’s sometimes finding the right balance between accepting yourself and improving yourself.

Accepting your reality doesn’t mean you have to settle for your current situation and don’t go after your dreams. But when you want to change your life or your situation, you have to first accept it in order to change it.

    Take Charge of Your Life

Only you can be responsible for your fulfillment in life. No one else can do that for you. So you have to take charge and come into action instead of waiting for a situation to unfold. Take responsibility and find ways to move forward to your life goals.

Fulfillment comes from within you. And many people mistake it by finding fulfillment in someone else. You can be very happy with someone else, but that person can have different goals on how to get self-fulfillment than you have. So don’t burden someone else with the job of making you happy. Look within yourself and go after the things you find important in life.

Also, avoid or stay away from self-pity because that doesn’t take you any further in life. Take responsibility for your life. And don’t make the easy mistake of copying others. We see an unrealistic perspective on people’s lives on social media, and often because of social media, we compare ourselves with others who are chasing their dreams. Which is unhealthy. And we think we have to do the same things to find fulfillment, but often that doesn’t work. You can get inspired by others but try not to copy other people’s lives, dreams, and desires.

If you tend to compare your life in retirement to others through social media and feel unhappy. Then it’s wise to limit your time on social media as much as possible, so you can focus more on yourself.

Find Your New Passion That Leads To Fulfillment

Everyone is looking or searching for their purpose in life. Once you know your purpose in life, you can work towards goals that are aligned with that purpose to find fulfillment. Sounds easy right? Well, not for most of us.

For some people, their purpose in life is very clear from an early age, but most of us are often continuously looking to our purpose. And this can be an overwhelming feeling.

Also, working life gave you purpose: earn money to pay the bills, save money, and achieving work goals gave you an accomplished feeling at the end of the day. In retirement, this is gone. And therefore, many retirees don’t feel worthy, useful, and accomplished at the end of their retirement day. And that’s because of the lack of purpose in their lives.

Before you start to question: Why am I on this planet? Consider the following route: If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion that will lead to your purpose.

So search for something that you’re passionate about and love to do, and you grow your self-confidence and have an accomplished feeling. And it can lead you to live a more purposeful life in retirement.

    Ways To Find Your Passion:

    • Passion is energy. Feel what excites you.
    • What is a topic you can read 500 books about?
    • What’s the thing you never get bored of?
    • What is something you love to talk about?
    • What do you love to do without getting tired?
    • What is a stress reliever for you?
    • What gives you satisfaction, joy, and happiness?

    Practice Personal Development

Because finding fulfillment is an ongoing process, it cannot be found without growing as a person. And you can see your retirement years as an excellent opportunity for a new start.

In past years, you have developed yourself on a professional level. And this time in retirement, you can use it to grow more on a personal level. Also, practicing personal development gets you closer to who you are as a person, which will get you closer to finding fulfillment. We can work closer to our personal goals by learning more about ourselves.

Improving yourself is not about not accepting yourself. It’s about building on top of self-acceptance to be a better person. And by reflecting on a regular basis, you can figure out what areas need improvement, or you like to work on. Maybe you want to become more conscious about life decisions, learn to be more of a positive thinker, or transform your weaknesses into strengths.

    Ways To Practice Personal Development:

    • Read books
    • Watch TEDtalks
    • Listen to inspirational podcasts
    • Get a mentor or coach
    • Create new routines
    • Reflect regularly
    • Watch inspirational videos on YouTube

    Know Your Core Values

Only by knowing your core values, you can set life goals that align with your values, and you can find fulfillment. And nothing creates more stress than when our actions and behaviors aren’t congruent with our values.

A value is what you value. And a “core” value is one of 4-6 values that you prioritize above all other values. And when these values are obvious to you, it’s easier to make life decisions and setting goals to get fulfillment in your life eventually. Here’s how to discover your core values.

    Step 1: Collect Data
Collect data from the past. Your life is a record of your values and you can find them out by questioning the following: what are the key moments, decisions, highlights (and low) that have defined your life, to-date?

Maybe you weren’t aware, but your values guide you to decisions and also influence your choices, both big and small. By asking yourself questions about your life, you can identify the values that form the basis for who, and how, you are.

    Questions you can ask yourself:

    • What was the best day of your life?
    • What are you most proud of?
    • What makes you angry?
    • Who do you respect?
    • What are your obsessions?
    • What is your favorite quote?

Step 2: Find the ‘Why’ in the data
After answering the above questions, you can ask yourself “why”? The answers to these questions: are the values.

Here’s a list of 200 core values to make things easier, but below is a list of the most common human values.

    • Achievement: It is important to work hard, challenge myself, and be the best.
    • Belonging: It is important to be accepted by others and to feel included.
    • Concern for the Environment: It is important to protect and preserve the environment.
    • Concern for Others: The well-being of others, and helping others, is important.
    • Creativity: It is important to have new ideas, create new things, or be creatively expressive.
    • Financial Prosperity: It is important to be financially successful.
    • Health and Activity: It is important to be healthy and physically active.
    • Humility: It is important to be humble and modest about my accomplishments.
    • Independence: It is important to have a sense of autonomy with my decisions and actions.
    • Interdependence: It is important to meet the expectations of my family, social group, team, or organization.
    • Precision: It is important to use logic and data to understand and solve problems.
    • Privacy: It is important to have time alone.
    • Responsibility: It is important to be dependable, trustworthy, and maximize potential.
    • Spirituality: It is important to have spiritual beliefs and act accordingly.

You can use the above list as a guide to identifying the values that fit the best to your answers in step 1.

Step 3: Prioritize your Core Values
Now that you have a list of different values, it’s time to narrow it down to 5 core values. This can be a hard process but prioritizing your most important values gives you a lot more clarity. And if you value everything, you value nothing. So you have to make decisions.

Step 4: Translate what the core values mean to you
Values are single words, but that isn’t enough. So the next step is to translate each of your core values to what it means to you. What kind of behaviors, expectations, and/or actions reflect this value to you.

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is often the quickest way to learn more about yourself. You never know what kind of qualities you have if you don’t challenge yourself once in a while. And getting out of your comfort zone has many benefits:

    • it creates just enough good stress to ramp up your focus, creativity, pace, and drive
    • it helps you be more productive,
    • it boosts your creativity
    • it helps you to be more flexible when unexpected things happen in the future
    • and it contributes to more happiness in your life

And exploring new things is the only way to find out if you like something or not. Maybe your passion is something you have never done before, so how can you find your passion if you don’t go out to explore?

See your retirement as one big adventure of exploring new things in life. Create a beginner’s mindset where you have an attitude of openness, eagerness, curiosity, and a lack of preconceptions when studying a subject. Just like a beginner or child.

Sticking to old hobbies and routines can make you feel bored. And stimulation is one of the things most retirees miss in their life, so make sure you stay stimulated in retirement.

Contribute To Something Bigger Than Yourself

The most authentic way to get fulfillment in life is to contribute to something bigger than yourself. And most people find fulfillment by helping others. And this can be in any shape or form. Like doing volunteer work to help others within your community or being a mentor or coach for the next generation within your old job field.
Fulfillment isn’t selfish gain but contributing and experiencing a more enriched life for everyone around us. And by volunteering or taking on a mentoring role, you can interact with other people more often. It helps you to stay socially active. Interactions, sharing opinions, and experiences with others keep you focused and help you focus more on what you really want to do. It works both ways. You can help others with your experience and learn from others as well!

    Question Yourself

You can do soul-searching by asking yourself questions. You know, the harder questions that require an answer from the soul and not the brain. It’s not about knowing the right answer to the question but feeling the answer to the question. And therefore you have to be honest with yourself completely. And be open to maybe surprising answers that you don’t want to hide or run away from but be curious and interested in.

    Examples of Soul-searching Questions:

    1. What’s the one thing I’ve always wanted to do?
    2. When my life is ideal, I am_______?
    3. If I could spend today doing whatever I desire, what would it be?
    4. Where do I really want to live?
    5. What are the reasons I don’t go after my dreams?
    6. More than anything, before I die, I want to ___________?
    7. If I were to make just one radical change in my life right now to make life better, what would it be?
    8. What could I do today that would fill me with joy?
    9. How do I feel when I put all my effort into accomplishing one of my goals?
    10. What’s missing from my life?
    11. Do I follow the crowd or listen to my inner guidance?
    12. What emotions am I afraid to show?
    13. What are limiting beliefs holding me back?
    14. Is there someone I need to forgive?
    15. Is there a conversation I need to have?
    16. What do I need to let go of to move forward?
    17. Who do I love spending time with?
    18. Are my actions guided by love or fear?

You don’t have to answer all these questions, because that can be overwhelming. Look for a couple of questions that you find most important in life and see what your honest answers are.

But be aware that when we are afraid of something, we’re likely to run away from it. And in this exercise, it can mean that you tend to avoid certain questions because you’re scared of the answer. These are the most important questions you need to answer for yourself. Because that answer is probably what your soul is trying to whisper to you (for a long time). And you need to hear it.

Calm Your Mind – Start Meditating

As I mentioned earlier, you will experience stress when your actions and behaviors aren’t congruent with your values. In short, stress is caused by tension between the ego (false self) and the soul (true self).

The alternative to that is to be at peace. To be satisfied and living a life in harmony: fulfillment.

To be at peace with yourself is also to have peace of mind. And that’s why you need to quiet the mind regularly. Our behavior is caused by our thoughts, so we need to be aware of our thoughts to change our behavior, actions, and outcome in life.

Meditation is an excellent way to train your mind and create more awareness of your thoughts and feelings on a daily basis. It’s not about controlling the mind, but it’s to stop letting the mind control us. And only when we quiet the mind, we can hear our soul speak. The softer voice of our heart and signals from our intuition gets often over yelled by our thoughts. Certainly, if we don’t listen to it.

We can drive ourselves crazy with our thoughts and that changes our perspective and reality in life. When we feed our ego with negative thoughts, it will drive us further away from who we really are. And when we’re in our head, we’re not living in the present moment and only in the now is where we can find happiness.

I use the app Headspace often for my meditations. It’s now one of the most used meditation apps worldwide, and that’s because it’s easy and accessible for everyone.

Listen To Your Intuition – The Key To Unlock Your Fulfillment

Our intuition is a source of knowledge and wisdom we can use to guide us in the right direction in life. Often our intuition shows us what we must or mustn’t do without any proof other than our gut feeling we feel in our body.
And (almost) every time your gut feeling will have it right.

In modern society, we listen more to our rational minds because that’s more logical. We can’t prove or see intuition, and that’s why we neglect it and see it as something non-worthy. And because we are so trained to think with our minds. We don’t even know how intuition feels like anymore. So, how does intuition feel like?

Intuition is a peaceful feeling that you will feel in your chest or stomach. It’s often a soft feeling that something is off. You feel a tightness in your chest or stomach arise in a situation.

Sometimes your intuition tries to warn you, and you can feel stronger physical effects in your body. It screams out you. This often happens when we ignore our intuition for too long. When our mind and heart aren’t aligned with what our body is telling us.

Intuition is the voice of your soul, and only by listening to your soul, you can find fulfillment. But you have to train your intuition to become a better listener to the soft voice inside you. It’s like a muscle. We need to train it to make it stronger. And for you to hear it more loud and clear.

    Train Your Intuition:

    • Calm the mind and relax your body to listen carefully
    • Ask simple questions and feel out the reaction
    • Recognizing when intuition speaks (stomach or chest sensation)
    • Follow the decisions of your intuition. (follow the peaceful feeling: that’s the direction your intuition is guiding you towards).
    • Listen to your intuition each day to make the muscle stronger

You can practice following your intuition with small daily decisions, so you become more comfortable with the feeling of your gut feeling. Because what you will feed, will grow, so if you feed your intuition every day by following it what it says. Your intuition will become more present and easier to recognize.

    Don’t Mistake Pleasure For Fulfillment

We can find happiness and pleasure in things we like, but fulfillment is something deeper. We can have pleasure, fun, or feel happy in something we do, but fulfillment comes from the reason why we do it.

Getting pleasure from an external source gives us short-term satisfaction like a good cup of cappuccino.

Fulfillment is rewarding and gives us a long-term feeling of satisfaction. With fulfillment, you feel that warm feeling deep down in your soul. It’s the difference between liking something and loving something. It’s a peaceful feeling. And not to be mistaken with the short period of sensations and feelings in your body during a happy moment. It is a more delicate feeling.

Being Busy Is Not Being Fulfilled

Many retirees want to stay active in retirement. But you can have a busy schedule full of different activities and not feel fulfilled. Only with activities that are aligned with your purpose in life is where you’ll find fulfillment.

It’s good to stay active in retirement. Many retirees fall in the habit of staying at home too much: watching TV or scrolling aimlessly on the internet. So it’s good to get out there and be active in retirement. And the best way is to have a combination of physical, mental, and social activities to live a happy retired life.
